How to make fresh-from-the-farm burgers at home
Restaurants are making burgers at their own expense, but they’re doing it with a fresh, fresh ingredients, too.
With fresh, organic ingredients like spinach, kale, mushrooms, and artichokes, a dish can be prepared on site for an average meal cost of $3 to $4.50.
“I can cook and eat a meal in less than 30 minutes,” said the owner of a local grocery store.
“This is the cheapest way to eat out in Canada.”
But in 2017, the food industry was forced to adopt more stringent standards in order to compete with cheap imported ingredients.
Some restaurants have even banned the use of antibiotics, which have become the mainstay of restaurant burgers.
But for some restaurants, the practice is still an acceptable part of the restaurant experience.
“We are still in the middle of the food revolution,” said Lisa Geddes, a spokesperson for the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservice Association.
“What we are seeing in the restaurants is an explosion in the use and demand for fresh ingredients.”
She said that this is not just because the ingredients are more expensive, but because restaurants are finding that it is easier to cook and prepare a burger.
“It’s easier to do a quick cleanse on a raw chicken, for example,” she said.
But while the industry is pushing for more stringent ingredients standards, there are still some places that continue to experiment with what’s available.
For example, there is an artisan cheese that can be made with only raw cheese, but the owner has a chef and cooks it himself.
“There are certain recipes that we can do in the back of the kitchen and have some people eat it, but for the most part we’re still experimenting,” said Gedds.
There are also other places that are experimenting with new ingredients.
One of the best restaurants in Toronto, The Mockingbird, has an online menu that shows you the best burgers and salads in the city, with prices listed per order.
It’s a way for people to try out new ingredients, and to also see what they can do with them.
The menu has more than 3,500 burgers, salads, sandwiches, and other dishes on it, including a “Bread and Butter” burger, a sandwich that’s made with fresh ingredients and topped with butter, mustard, lettuce, tomato, and a cheddar cheese, and another that’s a grilled cheese with cheese, bacon, and onions.
“The best part is that it’s all free, so people can make whatever they want,” said owner Rachel Smith.
“But we can also customize for the specific occasion.”
While some restaurants are experimenting, other chains are sticking to the old ways.
“People want to be able to order a burger at home, but that’s not what we do at our restaurant,” said Wendy’s spokesperson Erin D’Agostino.
“So if you want to order one of our restaurants, we’ve got it in the fridge, and we’re going to try to get you in.”
The chain has a number of locations, including in Toronto and in Edmonton.
In both cities, there’s also a small number of chains like Panera Bread, who also have a menu that is similar to The Maringbird’s, and they also have restaurants that are still working on their own version of the menu.
But many people are still not going to be going out of their way to find the right burgers at The Moringbird or Panera.
“You have to go to the other places and order it,” said D’Aguostino, who said the chain does not have a hard list of what it has available.
“Our customers are really passionate about the food and the service and the food itself.”
And while it is becoming increasingly difficult for a restaurant to find new and better ingredients, the industry still has a long way to go before the whole food revolution has started.
But at least now, you can enjoy some of the new ingredients in a restaurant meal without having to make the long trip back to the supermarket.
